Staff Development Days |
Dear Parents,
Book Week
The students all looked wonderful dressed up in their
character costumes. Well done! They enjoyed the talk
from author Gennie Nevison. Thank you to Helen Wood
for organising this valuable learning experience.
Building Opening
The building opening ceremony went off smoothly with
our captains doing a great job with their speech. Their
public speaking was commended by the Senator. Well
done Annabelle and Lauren.
A huge thank you to Manny Affarian, for the beautiful
morning tea and also to Trevor, Sharon and Tania for
manning the coffee and tea orders. We’re getting quite a
reputation about our wonderful catering team.
Zone Field Event Report
Our students behaved and performed brilliantly at the Beecroft Zone Field Events Carnival yesterday. The
conveners commented on their wonderful behaviour.
Claire Byrne, Jack Watt, Christian Davy and Jas Lewis all
qualified for the 800m finals to be held on Wednesday 1st
September at the track carnival which is an outstanding
effort for a school the size of Arcadia! Congratulations to
Jas Lewis on her 2nd place in the 11yrs girls High Jump
P.B. of 1.37m and 2nd in the Long Jump which will see
her compete at the Sydney North Area Championships!
A special thank you to all the parents that assisted with
transportation especially Lindsay Atkinson who did a
great job as Team Manager!
We look forward to the performances of our Track team
tomorrow.
Ian Thomas
Springfest Parade
Thank you to everyone that came and marched in the
parade. We had a huge group of students and many
parents joining in which gave a great feel of what our
school is about, participation and support.
Father’s Day Stall
This Friday 3rd September is the Father’s Day stall.
We still need lots of donations so every student can buy
their father a present. They really enjoy choosing a gift
and it would be a shame if some were to miss out.
Helpers are also required to sell and wrap on Friday at
2:00pm. Students need to bring money to buy a gift on
Friday as there will be no IOU’s. Gifts will be priced
around $5.
Writing
One of our targets for the year is to improve student’s
descriptive writing. Some students entered stories or
poems in a Write4Fun competition, as we wait for results
I thought I’d share some of their work with you. I’m sure
you’ll be impressed. The first one is written by Tal Lewis
in Year 4.
Leanne Davies
School Banking
We have a new School Banking Co-ordinator, Jo Lovell.
Thank you to Jo for taking on this role.
Children are reminded to bring in their bank books every
Tuesday.
Canteen
We still need more helpers. If you can help, please contact Rosie Fraser at rosiefraser@michaelpage.com.au or call 0416 784 645.
Good Guys Shop for your School
Don’t forget to ‘shop for your school’. The promotion with the Good Guys will end in November, so if you are thinking of purchasing anything electrical head their way and don’t forget to mention the promotion.
Story written by Tal Lewis 4/5
Miner ran down the dark hallway and opened the observatory door. He raced to the telescope and looked through it.
“There!” Miner said with satisfaction as he saw the other island.
“That’s where I’ll be tomorrow.”
Meanwhile, Ben had already been waiting for hours in his little hut. Suddenly a loud echo rattled through the walls.
He got up and reached for the door, but he shouldn’t have. A jet of flame blew the door off its hinges and smashed it
into the wall. Ben screamed and jumped through the glass window behind him. He landed with a thud and found
Miner standing there, utterly bewildered.
“Let’s go,” whispered Ben panting.
As Minder and Ben got into the boat the dragon reared and looked them straight in the eye. They both screamed and
pushed off from the shore. The dragon narrowed his eyes and blew another jet of fire that missed them by an inch.
They were off… finally. Miner was at the paddles while Ben was at the rear steering their small vessel.
It was dawn and their island home was now behind them getting smaller on the horizon. They never stopped
paddling because they were afraid of the sea monsters. Their boat suddenly wobbled.
“What was that!?” they shouted in unison.
It rocked again. A roar terrorized the boys even further, and that was the last thing the boys heard before they plunged
under the surface of the water. They scrambled frantically as the monster lunged and smashed the boat. Ben reached
for his sword but he was knocked away by a massive tail. Miner drew his sword and lunged at the monster, but he hit
his armoured fin. The monster spun around and Miner stared at the massive teeth. It suddenly lunged into the air as
Miner took a breath. He faintly heard “take that you loser!”, before he was knocked out cold.
‘Miner” Ben screamed. Miner was going under. Ben dived into the water after Miner.
Miner woke three hours later when they had arrived on a small tropical island. It was evening.
“This is bad,” Ben said softly.
“It is,” said Miner grimly.
“Hello boys. What brings you here?” whispered a voice behind them. Both boys spun around instantly. Standing
there was an old man. He was tall, lean and from the boy’s perspective highly ranked in society meanings.
“Welcome to our safe grounds of Austral,”
“We made it!” the boys cried triumphantly.
“We made it to Austral!”
“I see you have weapons, do you seek attack?” the man said softly.
“No we come in peace,” replied Miner. “These were our only defence against the sea monsters”.
“Then you are welcome,” the man said brightly. “My name is Sumper,”
“Thank you Sumper,” Ben replied with a hopeful voice.
“I will see that you are well treated, so come and let’s celebrate”.
